About Lane Departure / Forward-Facing Camera

The lane departure or forward-facing camera is one of the most essential ADAS components. Mounted behind the rear-view mirror, this camera monitors lane markings, vehicles, pedestrians, and other road features.

Also Known As:

  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)

  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

  • Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

  • EyeSight (Subaru)

  • Multifunction Camera (MFC)

  • KAFAS (BMW)

How it Works: It uses a wide-angle lens to track lane boundaries and objects ahead, generally activating at speeds over 60 km/h. Many systems also include pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking based on this camera’s input.

Common Mounting Location:

  • Centre-top of windscreen

Calibration Required When:

  • Windscreen is replaced

  • Camera is removed or disturbed

  • Bracket is altered or replaced

  • Camera is disconnected or reconnected

Common Failures:

  • Aftermarket windscreens with misaligned brackets

  • Camera installed upside down or loosely

  • Blanking covers left on after installation

  • Lens contamination from fingerprints or dust

  • Aftermarket accessories (e.g. antennas) blocking view
